FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HOUSTON Sept. 14, 2015 – Percy L. Kennedy, Jr. has turned his journey as a single parent into an opportunity to serve others. As the founder of Single Parents Igniting Relationships in Truth (SPIRIT), Inc., Kennedy, and his leadership team have joined forces to provide a network of resources, tools and support to empower and uplift single parents and their children.

During the month of September, single-parent families are invited to participate in a variety of activities, hosted in partnership with Kids First Parents Second Resources, designed to educate, engage and entertain this growing demographic.

Events such as bowling, golf, and homeless outreach are ongoing activities to allow parents and children to bond throughout the year; however, Sept. 27 marks a special event—SPIRIT Family “Inside Out” Movie Day. The itinerary will feature a showing of the Disney film “Inside Out” along with entertainment, door prizes and giveaways. This fun-filled day will include a demonstration of the Wheel of Emotions, an interactive activity designed to educate parents and children on healthy emotional expression.

“I was watching ‘Inside Out’ and realized the characters in the movie are actually emotions themselves.” Kennedy explained. “The idea of the event is to give children an opportunity to feel empowered and feel at ‘HOME’ with their emotions. H.O.M.E. stands for honest, open, meaningful expression.”

SPIRIT activities in September include:

  • Sept 27th – SPIRIT Family “Inside Out” Movie Day, 3-6:30 p.m. at AMC Theatre at Deerbrook Mall, 20131 US-59 in Humble. Tickets are $10 and cover the cost of the movie, popcorn and drinks (with free refills). The first 100 families to register by Sept. 20 will receive free Cupcakes for Champs T-shirts. Register: spiritmovieday.eventbrite.com.
  • Sept 28th – SPIRIT Family Topgolf Event, 6-9 p.m. at Topgolf, 560 Spring Park Center Blvd. in Spring. The cost is $25 per adult and $10 per child. Families are invited to attend or bring a single-parent child out for an evening of food and fun. Register: spiritfamily.org.

With 34 percent of kids living in single-parent homes according to data compiled by Pew Research Center, the Beaumont-native is grateful for the support he received from family, friends and church members in raising his now, adult, son. He is using the wisdom and insights gained on his journey as a single father to build a support system for other single parents.

“People may say that kids do well in divorce and separation, but when they are 16 and 17, we discover a lot of anger issues are the result of an earlier separation; no one asked them how they felt,” Kennedy said. “76 percent of high school dropouts are from fatherless families, and 72 percent of inmates are from fatherless families. By innovating early on in the elementary ages, we hope to help children have a healthier emotional framework and to give them tools to cope in a healthy way.”

Kennedy wants to encourage positive relationships between law enforcement and youth, so uniformed law enforcement will be admitted to SPIRIT events at no cost. Businesses and churches are invited to sign up as sponsors for each event. If there are families who would like to attend but cannot afford the fee, please contact spiritfamilygolf@gmail.com.
